On Wednesday, December 18, SZA revealed the album artwork for Lana, the highly anticipated deluxe edition of her record-breaking album SOS. This new release promises to be a transformative addition to SZA’s catalog, featuring fresh music that reflects her evolving artistry.
A Stunning Album Cover
The album cover features SZA reimagined as a glittering, bug-eyed creature dressed in a golden camouflage jacket and cargo pants, blending into a natural outdoor setting. The captivating imagery hints at the creative direction of Lana, offering fans a glimpse of the artistry behind the deluxe release.
Release Details for Lana
SZA officially announced that Lana will drop on Friday, December 20, 2024, under Top Dawg Entertainment and RCA Records. The announcement came with a teaser video starring actor Ben Stiller, which she shared on Instagram.
The video also features an unreleased track titled “Drive,” further building anticipation for the release.
The Journey to Lana
SZA first mentioned the title Lana during her September 2023 concert at Brooklyn Navy Yard. She described the deluxe edition of SOS as “a whole ‘nother album,” promising seven to 10 new songs. In an interview with British Vogue, SZA elaborated on the artistic shift in her music, explaining how Lana differs from SOS:
“I think I am making music from a more beautiful place. From a more possible place versus a more angsty place. I’m not identifying with my brokenness. It’s not my identity. It’s sh– that happened to me. Piece by piece, my music is shifting because of that, the lighter I get.”
Earlier this month, she confirmed that Lana is the official title of the deluxe edition and even teased a potential tracklist.
The Impact of SOS
Released over two years ago, SOS was a groundbreaking success. The 23-song album produced five Billboard Hot 100 top 10 singles, including the chart-topping “Kill Bill,” and fan favorites like “Snooze” and “Good Days.” It dominated the Billboard 200 for 10 nonconsecutive weeks, setting a record for the longest-running No. 1 R&B/hip-hop album by a woman since Mariah Carey’s self-titled debut in 1991.
At the 2024 Grammy Awards, SOS was nominated for Album of the Year and Best Progressive R&B Album, with SZA becoming the most-nominated artist of the year with nine nods.
What to Expect From Lana
Fans can look forward to a collection of tracks that represent SZA’s growth as an artist. From the snippets shared so far, Lana promises to explore themes of resilience and transformation, presenting a lighter, more reflective side of SZA.
