Saturday Night Live wrapped up the year with its iconic comedic segment on Weekend Update, where co-anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che challenge each other to read unseen jokes live on air.
This year, the tables hilariously turned on Jost as Che introduced a new twist—roasted Jost about his wife, the talented actor Scarlett Johansson, while capturing her live reaction backstage.
The “Weekend Update” Tradition
For years, this segment has seen Jost and Che writing outrageous jokes for each other. Historically, Che has forced Jost into delivering hilariously cringe-worthy jokes about race and racism.
However, this year’s finale took a personal turn, as Che crafted a series of bold, wife-centered jokes for Jost, giving the audience and Johansson a moment to remember.

Scarlett Johansson’s Backstage Reaction
The humor began when Jost addressed the audience: “I want to dedicate this next joke to my boo, Scarlett Johansson.” A camera immediately cuts to Johansson backstage, looking visibly nervous while clutching a drink. Her expression alone sent waves of anticipation across the studio.
The first joke about Johansson revolved around her turning 40:
“Scarlett just celebrated her 40th birthday, which means I’m about to get up out of there!” Just barely finished the line, bursting into laughter. She egged him on, prompting Jost to continue, “Nah, nah. I’m just playin’. We just had a kid together, and y’all haven’t seen any pictures of him yet because he’s black!”
The audience erupted with laughter as a comical, Photoshopped image of the couple holding a black baby appeared on screen.

The Roast Intensifies
She wasn’t done yet, and the roast escalated further. Jost delivered a risqué joke about Johansson that shocked even her:
“Costco has removed their roast beef sandwich from its menu, but I ain’t tripping. I have been eating roast beef every night since my wife had the kid!” The punchline left the studio in stitches, but Jost wasn’t off the hook yet.
He finished with an additional line, “Nah, nah. I’m just playin’, baby. You know I don’t go downtown! Shiz! That’s gay as hell!”
A Night to Remember
The audience, Jost, and Johansson all enjoyed the playful ribbing, as did the host of the night, Martin Short, and musical guest Hozier. This year’s SNL holiday episode showcased not only the comedic brilliance of Jost and Che but also the incredible dynamic between Jost and Johansson.
