Big Lots Saves Hundreds of Stores After Bankruptcy Filing
Big Lots Inc. has secured a lifeline to keep hundreds of its stores operating after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September. The retailer, which initially planned to liquidate all its locations, has struck a last-minute deal with Gordon Brothers Retail Partners LLC and Variety Wholesalers Inc., potentially saving up to 400 stores.
The Bankruptcy and Initial Store Closures
When Big Lots filed for bankruptcy earlier this year, the company operated 1,300 stores nationwide. The financial struggles led to the closure of 315 stores, with plans for complete liquidation after restructuring efforts failed.
On Friday, the retailer announced it would have to shutter all remaining locations, triggering widespread concern among employees and customers alike.

The Rescue Deal
The agreement with Gordon Brothers and Variety Wholesalers has provided a glimmer of hope for the retailer. According to the deal, between 200 and 400 stores will remain open, continuing to operate under the Big Lots brand name.
In a statement, the company revealed that the saved locations “may employ Big Lots associates at the acquired stores and distribution centers, as well as certain corporate associates needed to support the go-forward footprint.” However, there’s no guarantee that all current employees will retain their positions, leaving uncertainty for many workers.

Impact on the DMV Area
The fate of Big Lots stores in the Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) area remains unclear. Earlier this year, 13 stores in the region were announced for closure. Some of these include:

- 6623 Governor Ritchie Hwy., Glen Burnie
- 3331 Corridor Marketplace, Laurel
- 21800 N Shangri La Dr., Unit 20, Lexington Park

Virginia

- 8533 Midlothian Tpke., North Chesterfield
- 1650 General Booth Blvd., Ste 200, Virginia Beach
- 14603 Telegraph Rd., Woodbridge
The deal raises questions about which of these locations will remain operational.
Looking Ahead for Big Lots
While the agreement brings hope, Big Lots still faces challenges in rebuilding its business. The retailer must streamline its operations and improve profitability to survive in a highly competitive retail landscape.
Key Takeaways
- Big Lots struck a deal with Gordon Brothers and Variety Wholesalers, saving as many as 400 stores.
- Stores will continue operating under the Big Lots name, though job security for employees remains uncertain.
- The DMV area, where 13 stores were set to close, awaits clarity on how many locations will remain open.
This last-minute rescue may offer Big Lots a path to recovery, but only time will tell how effectively the company can rebuild its brand and regain customer trust.
