Jake Dickert to Replace Dave Clawson at Wake Forest
Two days after Dave Clawson announced his resignation, Wake Forest has chosen Washington State’s Jake Dickert as its new head football coach, sources revealed on Wednesday.
Dickert’s Coaching Journey and Accomplishments
Dickert, 41, has been the head coach at Washington State for three full seasons, leading the Cougars to an 8-4 record this year.
His head coaching career began midway through the 2021 season when he replaced Nick Rolovich, who was dismissed for refusing the COVID-19 vaccine. After guiding the team through the season, Dickert was promoted to permanent head coach.

Washington State Performance Under Dickert
During his tenure, Dickert achieved an overall record of 23-20. In 2023, Washington State played in a two-team Pac-12, managing to craft a competitive schedule despite conference upheavals. The Cougars started the season strong with an 8-1 record but ended on a three-game losing streak.
Under Jack Dickert’s leadership, Washington State ranked 11th nationally in scoring offense, averaging 36.8 points per game.
Quarterback John Mateer emerged as a standout player, leading college football with 44 total touchdowns. However, Mateer recently entered the transfer portal, and offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle left to join Oklahoma.
Coaching Background
Before becoming a head coach, Dickert built his career in Division II and FCS programs. He joined Craig Bohl’s staff at Wyoming in 2017 and served as the team’s defensive coordinator in 2019. In 2020, he moved to Washington State as Rolovich’s defensive coordinator before taking over the head coaching role.

Dave Clawson’s Legacy at Wake Forest
Dave Clawson leaves behind a legacy of success at Wake Forest after 11 seasons. During his tenure, he led the Demon Deacons to seven bowl games, including an 11-win season in 2021 that culminated in an ACC Atlantic Division title. However, the team struggled in recent years, finishing with a 4-8 record in both 2022 and 2023.
Transition to an Advisory Role
Clawson will remain at Wake Forest in an advisory capacity. At his resignation press conference, he cited the evolving landscape of college sports, including NIL payments and the transfer portal, as factors influencing his decision.
“You can’t do something successfully, and it’s not fair to the players or the institution if your whole heart and soul isn’t into it,” Clawson explained.
“I did not want to do this; in my perfect world, I’d be having this press conference in three or four years. But given the current state of the industry, I felt it was time.”
Looking Ahead for Wake Forest Football
With Jake Dickert stepping in as head coach, Wake Forest is poised for a new chapter. Fans and players alike will be watching closely to see how Dickert’s leadership and strategies shape the future of the Demon Deacons’ football program.
