Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Defense, faced a contentious confirmation hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee on January 14, 2025.
The hearing was marked by stark partisan divisions, public protests, and allegations that have raised questions about his suitability for the role.
Support and Criticism
Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), the committee chairman, praised Hegseth’s unconventional background, likening him to Trump and suggesting it could make him an “excellent choice” for the position.
However, Sen. Jack Reed (D-R.I.), the committee’s ranking Democrat, sharply criticized Hegseth, citing concerns about his qualifications and character:
“Unfortunately, you lack the character, composure, and competence to hold the position of Secretary of Defense.”
Reed also expressed alarm over allegations against Hegseth, including past controversies surrounding his tenure at veterans’ nonprofits and sexual assault accusations.
Protests and Public Reaction
Hegseth’s testimony was repeatedly interrupted by protesters, three of whom were escorted out by Capitol Police. Despite these disruptions, Hegseth received a standing ovation from some audience members as he entered the hearing room.
Addressing Allegations
Hegseth addressed the allegations during his opening remarks:
- Veterans’ Groups: He denied being ousted from the nonprofits he led, emphasizing his pride in his work.
- Sexual Assault Allegation: Hegseth denied the 2017 accusation of sexual assault, noting that a police investigation ended without charges. His attorney has called the claims false, though a confidential settlement was reached with the accuser.
- Personal Conduct: He pledged not to consume alcohol if confirmed.
Experience and Criticism
Hegseth’s military experience, while notable, is less extensive than recent Pentagon leaders. He served tours in Guantanamo Bay, Iraq, and Afghanistan, but lacks senior military or government leadership experience.
In his defense, Hegseth argued:
“It is true that I don’t have a similar biography to Defense Secretaries of the last 30 years. But as President Trump also told me, we’ve repeatedly placed people atop the Pentagon with supposedly ‘the right credentials’…and where has it gotten us?”

Confirmation Prospects
Despite the controversies, some Republican senators believe Hegseth has sufficient support to advance through the Armed Services Committee and gain Senate confirmation. Comparisons have been drawn to the heated confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court, which also involved sexual assault allegations but ultimately led to confirmation.
The Senate vote will determine whether Hegseth’s unconventional candidacy aligns with the incoming administration’s priorities.
