MELBOURNE, Jan 12 (Reuters) – Aryna Sabalenka began her quest for a third consecutive Australian Open title with a convincing 6-3, 6-2 win over Sloane Stephens on Sunday.
Despite rain disrupting much of the opening day’s action at Melbourne Park, play continued on the covered showcourts, including Rod Laver Arena, where Sabalenka secured her victory in just over an hour.
Sabalenka Shines Indoors
The top-seeded Belarusian faced moments of resistance from the 2017 U.S. Open champion Stephens but ultimately dominated with five breaks of serve and 20 winners. After clinching her spot in the second round, Sabalenka celebrated with an impromptu dance, delighting the crowd.
“It’s not like I played my best match, probably, but I was glad to close it out in straight sets,” said the 26-year-old.
She now prepares to face Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in the next round.
“I love playing here, it feels like home,” she added, reflecting on her success in Melbourne.

Weather Disruptions Impact Play
Heavy rain halted matches on the outside courts for over six hours, leading to the cancellation of eight of the 32 scheduled singles matches. Organizers relied on the extra day added to the tournament schedule last year to manage the delays.
Meanwhile, play continued on the covered show courts. Despite early struggles, Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen advanced to the second round with a win over Romanian qualifier Anca Todoni. Men’s sixth seed Casper Ruud and former world number four Kei Nishikori also secured hard-fought five-set victories indoors.

Looking Ahead
With rain continuing to be a factor, players must adapt to shifting schedules and conditions. For Sabalenka, the win marks a strong start as she looks to maintain her dominance in Melbourne and chase another Grand Slam title.
