During his confirmation hearing on Tuesday, Pete Hegseth expressed support for continuing to allow women to serve in combat roles, provided that high standards are maintained.
When questioned by Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) about his stance on the issue, Hegseth stated:
“Yes, women will have access to ground combat roles … given the standards remain high. And we’ll have a review to ensure the standards have not been eroded in any one of these cases.”

Hegseth added that his first steps at the Pentagon, if confirmed, would include conducting a gender-neutral review to ensure readiness and meritocracy remain priorities.
“It would be the privilege of a lifetime, if confirmed, to be the secretary of Defense for all men and women in uniform who fight so heroically,” he said.
Contradictory Remarks from the Past
Hegseth’s comments during the hearing contrast with his earlier statements. In a November 7 podcast, before being nominated, he argued against women in combat roles:
“It hasn’t made us more effective. Hasn’t made us more lethal. Has made fighting more complicated.”
Commitment to Address Sexual Assault
Hegseth also pledged to appoint a senior-level official dedicated to sexual assault prevention and response, a point emphasized by Sen. Ernst, who has long advocated for addressing the prevalence of sexual assault in the military.
“Yes, I will,” Hegseth affirmed during his exchange with Ernst.
Political Controversy
Hegseth, a Fox News anchor and one of President-elect Trump’s most controversial Cabinet picks, faced tough questioning from Democrats over his past comments about women in combat. Despite his prior criticisms, he assured the Senate committee of his commitment to inclusivity and maintaining military standards.
If confirmed, Hegseth’s leadership will play a significant role in shaping policies affecting women in combat and addressing issues of sexual assault within the military.
