Markus ‘Notch’ Persson, the creator of Minecraft, has hinted at the possibility of a spiritual successor to the iconic game in a candid social media post. While he stopped short of confirming a full sequel, his remarks have reignited excitement among fans of the block-building phenomenon.
The Announcement
In his post, Notch shared:
“I basically announced Minecraft 2.”
This comes nearly 15 years after the release of the original Minecraft in 2009, which Notch developed in just over a week. The game grew to become one of the most successful titles in history, later acquired by Microsoft for $2.5 billion in 2014.
Notch expressed enthusiasm about returning to game development, saying:
“I thought that maybe people ACTUALLY do want me to make another game that’s super similar to the first one, and I’m loving working on games again.”
He added that while he isn’t fixated on which game to create first, the idea of making a spiritual successor to Minecraft has crossed his mind.

A Spiritual Successor
Notch acknowledged that spiritual successors are often seen as “tragic” and “washed up,” but he’s open to pursuing the idea if fans show interest—and financial support—for a new product.
He also emphasized that any new game he creates would not interfere with Minecraft’s ongoing development under Mojang and Microsoft:
“It wouldn’t infringe on the incredible work the Mojang team is doing and that Microsoft is successfully doing.”
Challenges Ahead
Despite his excitement, Notch was realistic about the hurdles he might face:
“Honestly, I’m not even sure I’ll make it to release, based on having been me for all my life.”
Still, he expressed joy at being back in a creative space, working on games again, and hopes to give the project a genuine shot.
What’s Next?
While there’s no certainty that Minecraft 2 or its spiritual successor will come to fruition, Notch’s return to game development has fans buzzing with speculation. For now, it’s clear he’s enjoying the process and is willing to explore the possibility of revisiting the blocky sandbox genre that defined his career.
Whether or not a new game ever releases, the idea of a fresh creation from Minecraft’s original visionary is enough to reignite excitement in the gaming community.
