January 16, 12:39 PM – Milan
Jannik Sinner, the world’s top-ranked player, opened up about the unexpected challenges he faced in his second-round match at the Australian Open. Speaking courtside with John McEnroe, Sinner acknowledged the difficulty of the encounter but expressed satisfaction with his performance.
“It’s always tough to play against opponents I don’t know well,” Sinner began, reflecting on his victory over Schoolkate. “At the start, he was serving and playing better than me. I’m really happy with my performance. I don’t take anything for granted—that’s the mindset I need to carry into the next round. It was a tough match, but I know I can improve.”

Struggling with the Wind
Sinner admitted that the conditions, particularly the wind, affected his game. “I had trouble with the wind, but it was an honor to play in the evening session,” he said. “The conditions were challenging, but it’s definitely better to play here than on the outside courts. Let’s see what happens in the next round, but I’m happy to be here.”
Despite the difficulties, Sinner remains focused on defending the title he won last year. “It’s a different feeling being here as the reigning champion, but I see it as an opportunity to replicate last year’s success. I know the level of play can be higher, and I’m confident I can step it up.”

A Lighter Moment with McEnroe
The match wasn’t without its lighter moments. On the iconic Rod Laver Arena, McEnroe joked with Sinner about his composed demeanor. “You’re not as exuberant as the other Italians…” McEnroe teased, prompting laughter from the crowd.
Sinner playfully responded, “No, I’m not like you.” Smiling, he added, “Everyone has their own mentality. Maybe it’s better if I stop here…”
It was a moment that showcased Sinner’s charm and wit, proving he can entertain on and off the court.

The Path Forward
As Sinner looks ahead to the next round, his determination to build on his momentum is clear. With his sights set on another successful run in Melbourne, fans can expect the world No. 1 to keep delivering high-level tennis and moments of brilliance both on and off the court.
