United States Reaches United Cup Final with Gritty Wins by Gauff and Fritz
The defending champion United States is just one win away from claiming another United Cup trophy after a dramatic semi-final victory against Czechia.
Coco Gauff Sets the Tone
World No. 3 Coco Gauff started the semi-final strong with a commanding 6-1, 6-4 victory over Karolina Muchova. Gauff’s win gave the U.S. a 1-0 lead and extended her unbeaten record against the Czech to 4-0.
“It’s never easy against Karolina,” Gauff said after the match. “I stayed focused and intense throughout, and that made the difference today. I’m happy to give my team a strong start here in Sydney.”
Gauff’s dominance was evident from the start, as she raced to a 3-0 lead in under 10 minutes and saved two break points to close out the first set. Although Muchova fought back briefly in the second set, breaking Gauff’s serve, the American’s defensive prowess forced errors from her opponent, sealing a 90-minute win.

Taylor Fritz Seals the Tie in a Dramatic Match
Following Gauff’s victory, World No. 4 Taylor Fritz secured the United States’ spot in the final after a grueling battle against Tomas Machac.
Fritz came back from the brink of defeat, breaking Machac’s serve as the Czech served for the match at 7-6(4), 5-3. Fritz then claimed three straight games to force a deciding set. Unfortunately, Machac retired due to cramps and left knee pain, giving Fritz the victory.
“He said he’d been cramping for a couple of games already,” Fritz said. “It’s really humid out here. I was hoping to push it to a third set, knowing the physical conditions might take a toll. It’s not the way I wanted to win, but we’re all happy to be back in the final.”

Machac’s Battle Ends Prematurely
Despite his retirement, Machac put up a strong fight. The World No. 25 led much of the match, earning 10 break points and playing aggressively. However, physical issues ultimately cut his effort short.
Machac had already impressed at the United Cup, battling through a three-hour match against Casper Ruud and defeating Hubert Hurkacz and Flavio Cobolli earlier in the tournament.

Looking Ahead to the Final
The United States will face Poland, led by World No. 1 Iga Swiatek and No. 11 Hubert Hurkacz, in Sunday’s final. The Americans, who won the inaugural United Cup two years ago, aim to reclaim their title.
“It’s great to be back in the final,” Fritz said. “We’re ready to give it our all and bring the trophy home again.”
Gauff’s Confidence in Team USA
Before Fritz’s match, Gauff expressed her faith in her teammate. “Taylor has one of the best mindsets on Tour,” she said. “After spending time with him at the Olympics and this past week, I know he’ll pull through. If not, I’ll be ready to play mixed doubles.”
With Gauff and Fritz leading the charge, Team USA is poised to make history once again at the Ken Rosewall Arena in Sydney.
