California Family Clarifies Controversial License Plate Misunderstanding
A family in Los Angeles has clarified that their Tesla Cybertruck’s personalized license plate, “LOLOCT7,” was not meant to mock the October 7 Hamas attacks on Israel, as widely interpreted. The family stated the plate was an “endearing nod” to their grandfather.

The controversy arose after the license plate, which some read as “LOL October 7,” went viral, sparking outrage and prompting a swift apology from the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Critics, including the advocacy group StopAntisemitism, condemned the plate as a “vile mockery” of the lives lost during the attack and demanded action.
The DMV admitted oversight, apologizing for not rejecting the plate during their review process and promising stricter policies to prevent future incidents. However, the family explained that “LOLO” means grandfather in Tagalog, “CT” refers to Cybertruck, and “7” represents seven grandchildren. Despite the misunderstanding, they have agreed to change the plate.
